TALK: Siv Gøril Brandtzæg,”Scandinavian Broadside Ballads: Recovering a Cultural Heritage.”

October 16, 2017 @ 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

“Scandinavian Broadside Ballads: Recovering a Cultural Heritage”

This talk considers the historical and cultural significance of the Norwegian broadside ballad (“skillingsvisen”), a genre which until now has been denigrated and marginalized in Norwegian research. By providing an overview of the characteristics of the genre in a Scandinavian context – the formal and thematic qualities of the ballads; the manner of printing, circulation and performance – the presentation aims to shed light on meeting points as well as fundamental differences between the British and Scandinavian ballad in the early modern period and beyond.

Siv Gøril Brandtzæg, PhD (2012), Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), is a postdoctoral scholar in the research project Enlightenment News in Trondheim. She has published on eighteenth-century British and Scandinavian literature and media, and is currently writing a book on novel advertisements in eighteenth-century British and North-American newspapers. She is also developing a project on Norwegian broadside ballads.
