Miscellaneous Musings

By Leticia C. García | February 1, 2021

Welcome to Miscellany: An Early Modern Blog. We’re officially back in action! We’ve got three things for you today: history, objectives, and an invitation. Together with our UCSB community, we hope you join us on this journey as we rebuild and initiate our new online presence.  Originally launched in 2016 by the Early Modern Center (EMC) and led by then graduate student Kristy McCants, Miscellany was first devised as a space for public-facing writing for graduate and undergraduate students on the UCSB campus. Miscellany  in its early phase covered campus events, student research, and research tools. We envision our relaunch as picking up where we the EMC team left off back in 2016.

Miscellany 2021 is a digital, public-facing publication dedicated to publishing responses to talks and events, book reviews, and informal musings on early modern research, literature, culture, scholarship, and pedagogy. All posts will be written by our EMC faculty members, graduate students, undergraduates, and the wider UC community. We are dedicated to promoting the voices of graduate students, early career faculty, lecturers, theatre artists and practitioners as we work to build a dynamic, inclusive future for early modern studies on campus and around the world. Since COVID-19 upended our lives in early 2020, there has been a noticeable  drive and commitment to interconnectedness, the sharing of knowledge, and accessibility. Never before have we been more tapped into the work folx are doing all over the world, and in our own communities. Miscellany is here to serve any and all that need a platform.

We hope that this blog serves as a vehicle and a space to showcase the amazing programming  in our EMC community, but also as a  tool for creative expression and the cultivation of connections near and far. Central to our mission is development of public-facing writing that is accessible to everyone. For this reason, Miscellany is dedicated to uplifting a diverse set of  voices that not only demonstrate the multifaceted perspectives of our communities, but approaches to research, pedagogy, and arts and culture. Here at Miscellany you will read about trending topics in the EMC community, student research, pedagogy,  performance, book reviews, theatre and film, but also about the realities of student and academic life. This is all to say that we  have some fascinating blogs coming your way this academic year and beyond. First up will be our very own EMC Fellow Anita Raychawdhuri (English doctoral candidate) covering the recent RaceB4Race® Education symposium and the incredible insights shared during the course of the event.

As a public-facing platform, we aim to shed light on the intricacies of our experiences within EMC communities and beyond and this means that we would love  to hear from you. We invite pieces of 1000-1500 words in length. We happily welcome proposals for topics as we rebuild and re-establish our online presence. We ask that any images you may provide are readily accessible, high resolution, and have the necessary permissions to be published on our blog. Submissions are due the 5th of every month and we anticipate publishing pieces by the last week of every month. We are currently accepting submissions for publication between March 2021 and December 2021. If you are interested in public-facing writing this is an excellent opportunity to hone your skills. Please join us! We look forward to hearing from you.
